Starting the new year fresh can be tough at first. Keeping it simple is key to success.
I'll kick off my "2015 Fresh Series" of blog posts with a super simple salad dressing that packs a multitude of benefits to your body; and provides the post holiday cleansing it needs. Stay tuned each week for tips on ways to jumpstart weight loss, vitality, better energy, and for whole food and detoxifying recipes.
Organic Nutritional ACV Olive Oil Dressing:
This recipe calls for nutritional yeast (check a health food store bulk section near you). It's inexpensive and VERY rich in B-Vitamins needed to replenish your body. Especially after eating more sugar than normal as sugar depletes minerals in your body. Additionally nutritional yeast helps to manage stress and energy levels if you happened to have a particularly rough holiday.
Sprinkle it on salads, steamed veggies, soups and even popcorn. YUM! It has a subtle cheesy flavor that many love:)
The second ingredient in this recipe is organic olive oil from Italy. Try to spend around $15 or more on your oil (or more) to ensure that its real. Google "how to buy real olive oil" for more info on what to look for. Many olive oils aren't olive oil at all. They are cheap knock-off vegetable oils that companies pass as olive. Look into this for the best nutrition! Other options are organic flax seed oil or organic hemp seed oil. Play around - see what you fancy!
Lastly, Braggs Brand Apple Cider Vinegar. Among the many reasons to consume organic (with the "mother") apple cider vinegar (ACV), is the benefit to the stomach and the intestines. Making the stomach an acidic place, hospitable for your food makes it a great thing to ingest before a meal. Eat this with your first course salad. ACV is wonderful for people with acid reflux, bloating, stomach upset with certain foods and other stomach problems.
Directions for dressing per large salad:
•2 heaping tbsp of nutritional yeast
•2 tbsp of organic olive oil (or flax or hemp oils)
•2 tsp of ACV
Throw ingredients in a large bowl with salad veggies of your choice and stir vigorously with a large spatula. Coat the lettuce well. Done. That's it!
***To sweeten the dressing add a small amount of honey, agave, stevia or xylitol.
Why is this a detox salad dressing?
For starters, because oils contribute to better elimination. As my professor at school says, "you've got to lube the tube". When we eliminate more completely, we get rid of substances that bog down the immune system, disturb hormones and create inflammation.
As I mentioned before, apple cider vinegar supports healthy digestion beginning in the stomach. It is also a natural antibacterial substance so it's great if you're trying to avoid getting sick. It's packed with amino acids and minerals and it helps to give you a natural boost when fatigue is a problem. This is the tip of the iceberg of reasons why to ingest and use ACV. Google benefits of apple cider vinegar (always use Braggs Brand); you'll be amazed at all that it does for us!
