Avoiding High Fructose Corn Syrup?
But there's always more to know and here's the latest on this toxic substance.
The sneaky-wankers at the Corn Refiners Association (read all their bullshit here) are changing the name from highly recognizable and now-shunned High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS), to plain old "fructose" or "corn fructose"
So - when your purchasing children's cough syrups (yes, for real), boxed foods, breads, pastries, crackers, cookies, treats, juices, kids foods etc - Look for FRUCTOSE and CORN FRUCTOSE too!
This is a major bummer, but take heart soldier. We are winning this battle with contaminated corn - companies right and left are making the switch away from HFCS - Whether or not they will try to do the old switch-a-roo and use fructose or corn fructose remains to be seen.
Corn is contaminated on three levels; a veritable triple whammy.
Almost all corn in the US is GMO.
Genetically Modified foods are new to this world and our bodies; only in wide circulation for the past 20 years.
It's interesting to me how this coincides with increases in so many diseases that we've never seen (quite like this) before.
Unlike regular breeding and hybrids between same plant species, genetically modified foods (GMO's) are created in a lab by injecting DNA and RNA from fish, animals, bacteria, viruses and God-knows-what else, to take on the desired traits per Monsanto and other Biotech companies. It's said that they do this to feed the world - when organic yields are JUST as high as conventional yields (and more profitable to the farmers too) according to The Rodale Institute, who has done the longest side by side comparison of organic vs. conventional farming in the country.
It's HIGHLY processed. It takes quite a bit of finagling to become such a wretched and yet ubiquitous substance. Harmful solvents are used in this process, lacing corn syrup with concentrations of the most neurotoxic substance on earth. Mercury.
"For decades, HFCS has been made using mercury-grade caustic soda produced in so-called "chlor-alkali" or industrial chlorine plants that use mercury cells. The caustic soda, which can thus contain traces of mercury, is used to separate the corn starch (that goes to make the syrup) from the kernel."
Never heard such a thing before? You are not alone my friend; I had never heard this before today.
But it's here in black and white in the Washington Post - and I'm not surprised. These processed substances whether it's corn syrup or canola oil are never good for our bodies - they are simply put dead, de-natured and adulterated foods that harm us, our kids and the planet.
High Fructose Corn Syrup, Corn Fructose or Fructose - whatever you call it, damages the innate balance of the body.
Even if it WAS organic and Non-GMO - it would still impact our livers, contributing to diabetes, obesity, disrupting our body's hormonal balance...
....AND has been shown to destroy health in lab rat testing - here's a very resent study out of the University of Utah that showed,
"When University of Utah biologists fed mice sugar in doses proportional to what many people eat, the fructose-glucose mixture found in high fructose corn syrup was more toxic than sucrose or table sugar, reducing both reproduction and lifespan of female rodents. "
Avoid GMO corn, HFCS, Fructose and even processed (yet slightly less harmful) corn syrup like the plague.
It's easy to do if you buy organic; otherwise read your labels on all boxed foods to avoid. Look for natural brands from your local grocery store. Whether it's Kroger, Ralph's, Meijer or Whole Foods. Typically natural brands will avoid these ingredients but make sure anyway! Look for The Non-GMO Verified label on packaged foods (shown left). This labeling has become SO helpful to me and luckily participation from food companies has become widespread, since our government won't enact labeling laws.
Corn Syrup Alternatives in Baking?
Use local raw honey, maple syrup or real unrefined organic cane sugar. These are my top three suggestions. They are the most natural, and actually benefit your body as they do contain minerals that help to balance the sugar as it's metabolized in your body.
Next in line are agave nectar (only in moderation) or organic corn syrup (shown to the right) if you must. This way at least you're mitigating the damaging effect with this less harmful ingredient in food you're making at home.
We must be vigilant in our health always; since the FDA will not protect us, we must protect each other.
