Here's a testimonial from one clients recent experience with my Detox Support Package. She feels better than before her cleanse and is now a believer in the power of fasting. Reach out to me and I'll help you look and feel your best going into the winter and holiday season!

"About 6 weeks ago I was at the end of my rope with my body. I was feeling like none of my clothes fit, I was dieting and doing what I could to be physically active but I still had gained weight over the summer. I felt very down emotionally, I was frustrated and needed to do something for myself. I'd met Desiree over the summer and she suggested that I try a fast. I never had done anything like that before, but I did have a juicer (and enjoy freshly made juices) so I thought, "Why not??"

Fasting is the abstaining from solid food: Only ingesting juices, herbal teas and lemon water. Desiree said if I could do 4 days of fasting, then I could do 7 days. She said if I could do 7 days I could do 10 days or more. She was RIGHT! I loved fasting! It was difficult at times but I relied on her for guidance throughout the entire fast. I read her book on juicing and fasting. I fasted for 18 days and lost around 13 lbs! I felt so much better both mentally and physically. I've been trying to maintain the weight loss by fasting at least 1 day per week. It's weeks later now and I still feel so much better than before the fast. I know that fasting will become a part of how I stay well going forward, both mentally and physically."

I was SO proud of her! Way to go Alexis!!

I'm also extending a discount to all my Modern Hippie subscribers on my bodywork services for the month of October!

The bodywork I do with clients is a unique blend of massage, craniosacral, reflexology, essential oil therapy, flower essences and more. A 10% discount puts the price for a session to $67.50. I take all credit cards, checks and of course cash.

This is me doing some craniosacral therapy on a baby that was just 1 week old. What a joy! We all can benefit from the healing power of touch. I'd love to get you on my table!

2015 Fresh Idea #3: Raw Food Protein Shakes that Nourish & Cleanse!

iphone-20140107100025-4.jpg

There are a ton of naturally made, expensive protein powders out there.

But why bother when you can make one at home with real food for way less money and get much more whole food nutrition to boot?

Here's how I do it as of late:

  • 2 tablespoons ground flax (soaked)
  • 2 tablespoons chia seed (soaked)
  • 2 dates (soaked)
  • 2 tablespoons all natural peanut butter
  • 1 small organic banana
  • 1-2 pints of purified water
  • Heavy Cinnamon (I like cinnamon)
dates, ground organic flax and chia seed

dates, ground organic flax and chia seed

Soak the flax, chia and dates in a pint size jar, 3/4 full of purified water. Shake it up and leave it on the counter overnight. You can also add nuts like almonds, seeds like hemp or raw sunflower; there are so many options! Soaking seeds and nuts overnight makes them easy to digest and yields creamy, smooth, protein shakes.

In the morning add the soaked contents to your blender with a banana, 2 tbsp of natural peanut butter and 1 more pint of water (a little less if you like the smoothie to be thick.) I also add a heavy dash of cinnamon to mine because I'm hooked on cinnamon's blood sugar balancing and its great taste. It's wonderful for curbing a sweet-tooth!

This is what it looks like in the morning after going "expando" in the jar. These fibers absorb water, so fill a pint jar 3/4 full.

A Lil' Nutritional Info Here:

  • 2 tablespoons of chia contains 4 grams of protein, about 8 grams of fiber and more amino acids, vitamins, essential fatty acids, antioxidants and other micronutrients than you can shake a stick at!
  • Ground Organic Flax Seed is another superfood with 6 prams of protein per 2 tbsp, 4 grams of protein and again, packed with essential fatty acids and other protective components that help prevent diseases like breast cancer. (The lignan portion of the flaxseed helps to balance excessive estrogen).
  • Peanut butter has around 8 grams of protein per 2 tablespoons. YUM. It takes this smoothie to a whole other level of goodness. Use a natural brand that contains only nuts and salt preferably. Organic is best when available.

I soak a couple of dates with my seeds and nuts overnight, ALWAYS! Soak these to add a smooth sweetness to your protein shakes and for its nutritive content. Dates are SUPER mineral rich:)

Purchase dates with the pits and then remove pits prior to soaking. I'm not sure why, but dates purchased with the pits are sweeter and yield better flavor to smoothies.

Total protein content for this protein shake is about 18 grams - Boom! You can add more protein with the additional tips below.

Need more protein? Beef it up with these!

  • 1/4 soaked raw almonds or another raw nut of your choice

  • 1-2 tablespoon of Shakeology (if you have it handy and you like the flavor; chocolate with a banana is divine!

  • Spirulina Manna By Healthforce Brand (wonderful vegetarian protein source)
  • Blackstrap Molasses (unsulphured)
  • Organic and ripe peaches, pears, oranges or berries.
  • Flaxseed Oil
  • Hempseed Oil
  • sunflower seeds, hemp seeds, sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds
  • All of these protein and nutritional substances have one thing in common: They contain fiber that helps you better eliminate wastes from your body. Fiber like ground flax and chia help to gently remove stagnant wastes from the intestinal tract while nourishing and healing along the way.

What do you like to put in your whole food smoothie?

So what's this all about?

Have you ever wanted to try fasting but didn't know where to start? What exactly is fasting?

To fast is to abstain from food for a period of time to gain health and even spiritual benefits. By fasting, we redirect the body's focus to heal organs, eliminate carcinogenic substances, lower inflammation and heal both chronic and acute ailments. Join us to learn what you need to get started and how to fast comfortably, confidently and healthfully.

What we'll do

For 12 hours, from 9:00am to 9:00pm,  we'll gather to demonstrate and teach live organic juicing, live organic green drink making, supply organic herbal teas, classes on the benefits of juice fasting, yoga classes, outdoor activities, meditation, movie time, mock-tail happy hour and much more. You will walk away knowing how to fast and feeling empowered to get started on your own at home. There will be no food served, we will be fasting for this event, all in an environment that is comfortable, educational, inspiring and with activities to keep you content during this experience.

What to bring and what not to

Please bring a pillow and your yoga mat in case you intend to do yoga. We will have a few yoga mats here to use. We are recommending limiting use of phone and electronics so we have designated a "wifi area" where people can use phones, laptops or tablets. Disconnecting from our electronics is part of the cleansing process! We aren't saying - don't bring your phones. We are simply encouraging limited use for this cleansing process. This is not an event that is suitable for children, 18 and over only please.

Lansing Seminar Announcement! Juicing, Green Drinks & The Importance Of Healing The Gut For Health

Ever think of juicing but you just don't know where to start or what to buy?

Are you contemplating cleaner eating and drinking for improved health?

I'd love to share what I've learned!

Join me Saturday May 10th 2014 at the East Lansing Hannah Community Center from 2:00-4:00pm for my class on Juicing, Detoxing and Gut Healing!

I'm really excited to be bringing this class to the Lansing area! There will be live organic juicing, I'll be making green drinks for everyone to try and I'll be talking about the importance of cleansing periods for all people - regardless of age, diet or health. I'll speak at length on why healing the lining of the intestinal tract is so important for many common illnesses we see today.

Allergies, auto-immune conditions, fibromyalgia, asthma, arthritis, diabetes, depression, candida and much more can be improved or eliminated by integrating dietary changes such as juicing, bone broth, reducing and eliminating wheat and sugar and improving water quality.

Join me and I'll share what I've learned on my own health journey and through my education at the Naturopathic Institute of Therapies & Education in Mt Pleasant Michigan. I'd love to see you there!

Cost of the class is $20. Cash or Credit Cards accepted at the door. RSVP at this link!

Blessings to you all and Happy Spring!
