Swollen or bleeding gums can be very bothersome and is a sign that something is not right. Either you're not flossing enough (which aggravates your gums and causes them to bleed) or you need some nutritional support.
If you have common garden sage growing in your yard for culinary uses this is a great place to start. Sage is naturally antibacterial, antiviral and antimicrobial. It's healing and soothing to sore gums and sore throats!
Get the ball rolling by chewing the sage raw and/or sipping sage tea - 3 cups per day for adults. Half that for children and a quarter of that for infants. You can prepare a strong sage tea in about 15 minutes by brewing a cup or pot with the lid on to hold in all it's medicinal value. You'll know it's strong when it's dark in color and has a strong sage aroma. Make a large batch of sage tea (48oz or so) with 3-4 tea bags. This will keep in the fridge for 5 days. Swish with an ounce or so of sage tea each morning and night or gargle with it if a sore throat is the issue.
Sage Tea- to me, tastes like thanksgiving dinner. To get over this I like to add raw honey when drinking the tea- this is especially excellent when your gargling for a sore throat. Raw honey has powerful antibacterial elements that will often make the reason for the sore throat go Bye-Bye!
Another tip worth mentioning is to make sure you have a new soft bristle toothbrush and that your using sensitive fluoride-free toothpaste. No baking soda toothpastes either until the gums get stronger. Those will be too abrasive for sensitive gums. They also make sage toothpaste, zylitol toothpastes and neem toothpastes which are really helpful for gums to heal.
Sage has been known for centuries to be good for bleeding gums. It was chewed back then or drunk in an herbal infusion. This is by far the easiest thing to do, but another nutrient that is excellent for gum health is CoQ10. It's a somewhat pricey antioxidant but you're worth it! Try to take a healthy dose of 100-300 mg per day. CoQ10 should be taken by anyone with a heart problem, cardiovascular issues in general or is looking to stay younger longer.
Your gums should begin to improve almost immediately if you do the swishing, drinking of tea and CoQ10.
If the sage tea is too time consuming, you can buy a sage tincture and use that. Put 2 droppers full in a small amount of water and swish/or gargle that instead of sage tea. I would also recommend ingesting 2 droppers full with water until the gums become stronger and less prone to swelling and bleeding.
What I can't overstate here is the importance of gum and tooth health in connection to your overall physical health. Infections in the mouth, are a sign of infections in the rest of the body. Chronic swelling and infection of the gums is a sign of systemic problems elsewhere in the body. Did you know that dental health is directily related to your cardiovascular health and more!
Improving dental health with natural fluoride free toothpastes, flossing at least 3-5 times per week and making sure to rinse the mouth out after ingesting a sugary beverage will go a long way to improve the health of your gums, teeth and body. For an extra boost for those that are prone to poor dental health, avoiding wheat, refined sugar and beginning to juicing daily will help ALOT. Taking the Homeopathic Cell Salt Calc Fluor by Hylands is also beneficial to strengthen the teeth naturally.
