A Modern Hippie fan reached out to me asking what I thought about oil pulling. I have heard of it but I didn'tknow anyone that was doing it and I decided to do the experiment with it myself.
Oil pulling is swishing natural oil in your mouth for 20 minutes first thing in the morning. This technique has been done for hundreds if not thousands of years and has a variety of healthy benefit claims including, whiter teeth, better gum health, detoxification of mucus, decreasing the bags under the eyes and dark circles and more.
The idea is that impurities are "pulled" by the swishing of a natural oil in the mouth through the mucus membranes. Membranes under the tongue are very porous and directly connected to the lymph in and around the throat and under the ears. This is part of the dumping ground for your body for viruses, impurities and more from the blood. I'm not sure if biologically it makes sense to me yet, but I've decided to give it a go! I took photos of my teeth (which look pretty yellow to me). I also took photos of the milky white oil that I spit out after 20 minutes. On the oil pulling website that seemed most thorough to me, they said that the oil will look very white after swishing; this is a sign that you have done it long enough to experience the benefits.
It must be done each morning before drinking or eating anything, even water. A great variety of oils are used but I'm going to be using coconut oil. My plan is to do this for 6 weeks, then retake photos of my teeth and I'll post those for comparison.
My first experience was pretty easy. Many people talked about gagging on the oil and being unable to swish for 20 minutes. I didn't find it that difficult. Don't vigorously swish, just do it gently and rhythmically. I was swishing the oil while I was juicing to kill the time. I set the timer on the stove so I knew I did 20 minutes. I used about 1-2 tbsp of coconut oil which melts pretty quickly in your mouth. The taste was pleasant. In the last 2 minutes I started to get the sensation that I wanted to swallow but I resisted as that is the last thing you want to do. The most difficult thing about it was that my mouth became really full of oil and saliva and I was running out of room. I'll use less oil tomorrow.
Let's see what this is all about!
