Homeopathic and Herbal Suggestions for acute injury!Read More
Yep, over the weekend I slipped on the ice and came down full force on my elbow. I was terrified!
Not only did it hurt but the first thing to enter my mind (as I left my wallet and groceries in the street to get arnica from the glovebox) was, "How will I do Craniosacral with a bum arm?"
Luckily I got the arnica montana 30C in about oh- 30 seconds after I fell. I took it pellet after pellet for hours. Here are the rest of the things I did, and I think that these make GREAT first aid remedies to have at all times for any trauma. Remember- If you need to go to the hospital, call 911- then grab the homeopathics and herbals for on the way!
Arnica Montana 30C (GOTTA HAVE IT) This is a must for every first aid kit for trauma, bruising, accidents, head trauma especially and pain. 1 pellet under the tongue every 15 minutes for pain or injury. Available at all health food stores.
Hypericum 30C This is more for "nerve pain" which I began to experience a few hours after the fall. This is great for those strange stabbing sort of nerve ending pains that might come and go or hang around. Take this in the same manner as Arnica Montana. 1 pellet under the tongue every15 minutes for nerve pain. Available at all health food stores.
Panaway by Young Living Oil. I am officially a believer. Not only do I have ZERO pain 4 days later but the swelling went totally done within 24 hours. I only applied this maybe 3 times. It's very potent and only 1 drop at a time is needed.
Buffered Vitamin C- I didn't take this for my injury but for any sort of sprain or inflammation that is going to persist- do 3,000mg per day for a week or so then cut this in half for a week or so. If you get diarrhea this is too much for your particular system, take less. Vitamin C is a powerful anti-inflammatory.
The Homeopathic Cell Salts Ferrum Phos 6X, Kali Mur 6X and for broken bones, Calc Fluor 6X and Calc Phos 6X. These are tiny little marshmallow-like dissolvable pellets that are easy to take. 5 under the tongue ever hour just after the accident. Once your out of immediate pain you can dial it back to about 3-5 times per day. This will give your cells what they need to rebuild tissue, lower inflammation and control pain. Available at all health food stores and at vitacost.com for a great price- around $7.
Also, Topical arnica montana gel or cream would be great. Apply this 2-3 times a day. Available at all health food stores.
If there is still pain I would recommend the herbal Meadowsweet internally in liquid tincture by Herb Pharm brand. 60 drops in a shot glass of water ever half hour until pain subsides. Available at most health food stores.
My last bit of advice is to slow down! I fell because I was rushing to get to class. If I could turn back time, I'd have taken a bit more time getting there and probably not biffed it on the ice. This is my advice to myself as well! Physician Heal Thyself!!! haha
Hope this helps!
Know someone that has recently had a baby?
There are many natural substances and techniques for expediting healing after having a baby. Here's a list of what you or a friend might need in the days before and after bringing life into this world.
Arnica Montana: Arnica speeds healing, decreases pain, decreases bruising and will actually help with the entire labor process. If you can get you hands on a bigger dose, do it. A 10M would be appropriate for childbirth but is only available online or from a qualified naturopath. If you don't have time for this, get a 30C from any health food store and begin taking this IMMEDIATELY when contractions begin. Take it every 3-4 hours throughout labor, until the baby comes. After you can take this each our for pain until symptoms lessen. Arnica can be taken for a week after labor to speed up the healing process. There are MANY homeopathic remedies for labor- see a qualified homeopath, doula or midwife for more on this!
Herbs for a Sit's Bath: Buy Loose Organic Herbs from a health food store. Look for herbs that appear fresh, aromatic. This is an indicator of the medicine they contain. Herbs that might be helpful after birth to help expedite healing if there is tearing, bruising, soreness and for antiseptic purposes are:
- Yarrow Leaf and Flower: Antiseptic
- Marshmallow Root: Soothing, Demulcent, Healing.
- Plantain Leaf: Healing, Antiseptic.
- Lavender Leaf and Flower: Antiseptic, Relaxing.
- Chamomile Flower: Antiseptic, Soothing, Relaxing, Healing.
- Small amount of sea salt for healing
Essential Oil of Lavender by Young Living Oil would be SOOOOO helpful in the bath and applied to Mom topically after the birth. Apply to the feet, back of neck, lower back- or anywhere Mom likes it! It's the universal oil... when in doubt- Do lavender! It's healing, relaxing, and great for mother and baby.
Lastly if the birth was difficult, traumatic or if there was trauma to the baby in anyway- Mother & Baby can be taking Bach Flower Remedies internally from the beginning.
Here's a few that might be helpful:
- Star of Bethlehem: Trauma, shock, pain, grief.
- Elm: Feelings of being overwhelmed.
- Gorse: Feelings of hopelessness.
- Walnut: Transition into a new life.
I'm SURE that there are so many more that would be helpful. Bach Flower remedies are wonderful as they are side effect free, effective, safe for mother and baby and purely treat emotion. See my Emotional Wellness Remedy blog post to learn more about what you can do to support emotional wellness after having a wee-one:)
My last thought on healing after having a baby is bone broth. Bone broth helps speed recovery as it contains HUGE amounts of fats, nutrients and is easy to digest. Perhaps whipping up a batch with a farm raised chicken would be one of the best presents you could give to a friend who just had a baby? It's a simple thing, that can have her brain and body working it's best to take care of her new little one. Here's help with making bone broth.
Got something to add to this? Please chime in! I'm sure I'll learn so many more things to suggest, this is just the beginning!
Thanks for listening!
We went up with friends. They're avid cyclists, riding to school and work at least a few times a week. Carl and I on the other hand, hadn't looked at our bikes since last summer and we knew we could be in trouble.
I thought ahead though and picked up some Arnica Montana 30c (Arnica for short) from the local Health Food Store (Better Health). It's made by a company called Boiron. It's indicated for trauma, bruising and to speed recovery thereafter. It comes in little blue tubes and costs around $7.00. They're these tiny pellets that you take sublingually (let disolve under the tongue). 80 pellets per tube. Dose: 1 pellet.
